Review: VIVO Y70 – A successful model in low price range

Review: VIVO Y70 is an overall successful phone. This is a device for people who want a beautiful screen without exposing themselves to high costs

VIVO Y70 is a cheap and well-functioning smartphone with an AMOLED screen – something that until recently seemed impossible, and has been found more and more often for some time. By buying this smartphone you can enjoy a great-quality display and we are no longer doomed only to Samsung devices, which as a manufacturer of such screens could offer them from virtually every price range. In addition, we get a Qualcomm processor, a capacious battery and photos that are pleasant to the eye, which in total makes up an attractive device. There are more and more companies on the market that want to get a piece of the “post Huawei” cake for themselves, the trust of customers is won by well-priced average and Y70 is just such a case. So let’s see exactly what this device has to offer.

How do we rate design?

VIVO Y70 is a smartphone painfully correct. There is no room for madness in this price class, but it is important to keep as much practicality as possible and, to a large extent, the manufacturer managed to do so. Mostly, because the plastic, shiny backs collect greasy prints like crazy. Fortunately, the set comes with a transparent silicone case (with a USB-C plug), so after putting it on, the problem disappears. The problem of the phone wobbling on a flat surface, caused by the module with lenses slightly protruding above the back, disappears. And these are practically the only remarks, everything else is ok. Starting with the user-friendly dimensions – 161.00 x 74.08 x 7.83 mm, which means that the phone is thin and quite neat, due to the weight of only 171 g, and the comfortable arrangement of the buttons on the ending with one right side. On the lower edge of the plastic frame there is a mini-jack input for headphones, USB-C and a single speaker. The sound is as expected – loud, but quite flat. It is better on headphones, where we can choose one of the three sound profiles, depending on our age (under 30, 30 to 60 and over 60) or determine our own – on the basis of a hearing test. The slot for two SIM cards and an additional memory card are placed on the top, on the left side there is nothing.

What do we think about the display?

The screen is an AMOLED unit and words of praise are deserved for that. Its diagonal is 6.44 inches, FHD + resolution, 1080 x 2400 pixels, 409 ppi, and the aspect ratio is 20: 9. Visibility in full sun is very good, which I could see when taking pictures on a beautiful day – I had no problems with assessing the effects of the camera’s work. The color saturation and viewing angles are both great. In the settings, we can set the colors of the screen (standard, normal, bright) and adjust the color temperature with the slider. For this we have a dark mode and an eye protection mode. We do not have a notification LED, and the information displayed on the screen is limited to the time, date, battery level, messages, phone and messenger. On the other hand, “Dynamic Effects” are very extensive, i.e. various ways of illuminating the screen, including for notifications (you can choose one of several edge animations). There are also animations of the fingerprint icon, fingerprint recognition, face or turning the screen on and off.

The display has a “tear” notch for a selfie camera, and the refresh rate is 60 Hz. There is also a fingerprint reader hidden in it, which works perfectly, is fast and error-free, the phone can also be unlocked with the face and this method is also quick and hassle-free. There is a good quality protective film on the display.

Specification / operating system –

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 665 octa-core processor (4×2.0 GHz Kryo 260 Gold; 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 260 Silver), with the Adreno 610 graphics chip. We have 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of built-in memory, expandable with a card. In AnTuTu, the phone scored 185,802 points. Of course, it is not a speed demon, because it is not the price range, but you do not have to wait for anything, and most importantly – it is smooth, without lags and jams, which is definitely a pleasant surprise. This is certainly influenced by sophisticated software. VIVO resigned from the extensive overlay and made it slimmer, tidied up and made it similar to pure Android for the European market. In my opinion, the effects are very successful, because thanks to this and 8 GB of RAM, the phone keeps tabs in its memory for a very long time – definitely different than the rest of Chinese competitors. It is a pity that the weight loss has affected, for example, a separate music or movie player and you need to use the tools built into the file manager. The manufacturer’s representatives explained to me that music and movie streaming services are so popular that hardly anyone keeps their favorite CDs or movies in the phone’s memory.

We have gestures, a dark theme, a game zone, which is called the ultra game mode here, and an iManager application for managing the phone, which hides, among others the ability to encrypt applications or duplicate them.

GPS works flawlessly, thanks to NFC we will pay with a contactless phone, the quality of voice calls is very good. VIVO Y70 It will not be a dream device for demanding players, on PUBG you could see a slight loss of frames from time to time, but I have no comments to operate in less graphically demanding titles, and the phone does not heat up excessively.

The communication package includes: Bluetooth 5.0, dual band WiFi, NFC. Location is realized using: GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS. The set of sensors is: accelerometer, proximity, lights, magnetometer, gravity, fingerprint reader.

What photos does he take and what films does he record?

The camera set includes: rear

  • 48 MP, f / 1.8, 25mm, 1 / 2.0 “, 0.8μm, PDAF,
  • 2 MP, f / 2.4, macro,
  • 2 MP, f / 2.4, depth of field;

front:

The camera application is extensive, at the bottom we have the following modes: night, portrait – with the possibility of blurring the background and beautifying the face and posture correction, photo – with 2x digital zoom (maximum is 10x) and entering the background blur modes and super macro, video, and more we can also find a photo in 48 MP, a panorama, a moving photo, slow motion (max 240 FPS in 720P), a time-lapse movie, or an extended Pro with a histogram, spirit level and manual settings. At the top we have flash, HDR and various filters.

Moving on to the photos – in terms of possibilities it is rather poor, because we do not have a wide angle, and you should not expect miracles from the macro eye, but when it comes to quality – it is already quite good. The color reproduction is very nice and natural, the detail is very good, HDR pleasantly brings out the details from the shadow. The night mode gently brightens the scenes by sharpening the light sources, but also ordinary photos taken after dark are quite OK. The clipping and blurring of the background in portrait mode also looks good.

We will record videos in 4K and lower resolutions, in HD we can choose whether we want 30 or 60 FPS, in higher resolutions we have one range – between 25 and 30 FPS. During the recording, we can jump to 2x zoom, there are no problems with catching focus, in FHD the electronic stabilization works well, while recording in 4K it is better to stand still.

How long does the battery last?

The cell has a capacity of 4100 mAh, which is enough for two days of work on a single charge, in my case with the operating time on the screen on oscillating around 6 hours. The charger is 33W, charging the phone takes about 50 minutes. There is no inductive charging.

VIVO Y70 – Conclusion

VIVO Y70 is an overall successful phone. This is a device for people who want a beautiful screen without exposing themselves to high costs, and for this they need a reliable, well-functioning smartphone without special fireworks. The processor is very good at everyday tasks, thanks to the large battery, we do not have to worry that we will soon run out of energy, and the camera is able to take nice photos. The lack of waterproofness and inductive charging is not surprising, it is a pity for the wide-angle camera, but the manufacturer had to look for additional savings somewhere to be able to offer an attractive price and it was him. The most important thing is that it is difficult to talk about any disadvantages, there are only shortcomings, which is understandable in this price range.
