Apple has announced the new MagSafe Charger and Charger Duo for the iPhone 12. It is Apple’s first wireless charger since the (failed) AirPower . Read everything you need to know about this new charger with magnets here.
Do you remember MagSafe ? Apple used this term for years for the magnetic connection of the charging cable of MacBooks . Since 2015, Apple has gradually abandoned this practical and popular connection. MagSafe will be back in 2020, but with a completely different approach. The MagSafe Charger ( 45 euros ) and MagSafe Duo Charger ( 149 euros ) are two new wireless chargers from Apple, especially for the iPhone 12 series.

Functions of the MagSafe Charger and Duo Charger
The MagSafe Charger and MagSafe Duo are wireless chargers, which means that you do not plug a cable directly into the iPhone. The chargers themselves still run via a cable to the socket. The advantage over other wireless chargers is that the iPhone clicks onto it magnetically, so that it is always in place. So you no longer have to hassle with properly positioning your iPhone. Charging is therefore comparable to the Apple Watch , where the charger also falls into place magnetically.
An advantage of the MagSafe charger is that you can charge the iPhone wirelessly while you are using it. With other wireless chargers you have to put it down or put it upright, but you can keep holding the MagSafe charger at the same time. There is still a wire to it.
The MagSafe Duo Charger is a double charger that you can fold shut, so you can easily take it with you when traveling.
The MagSafe Charger and Duo Charger support charging with a power of up to 15 Watt. That is twice as fast as with a regular Qi charger, which can handle a maximum of 7.5 Watts on iPhones. This speed only applies in combination with the iPhone 12 and newer and is limited to 12 Watt for the iPhone 12 mini :
- iPhone 12 mini: maximum 12 Watt
- iPhone 12: maximum 15 Watt
- iPhone 12 Pro: maximum 15 Watt
- iPhone 12 Pro Max: maximum 15 Watt
Also works with other iPhones and AirPods
The MagSafe charger and MagSafe Duo charger are basically designed for the iPhone 12, because they contain magnets. But you can also use the chargers as a regular Qi charger with other iPhones and AirPods . If you use an iPhone other than the iPhone 12 or a wireless AirPods charging case, you do not use the magnets. In that case, you have to position your device properly on the charger. Other models charge at a much lower speed, under 7.5 Watts.
